Blood Relatives

Full cast audio drama produced at the University of Sunderland in 2007.

Every family has its skeletons in the closet. You know how it is. A long lost grandfather may never be mentioned, a death in the family could be ignored and denied, your own sister, heaven forbid, could turn out to be your mum. We all have our little white lies.

I, unfortunately, had to find out the hard way. So yes, every family has its secrets. It’s just that, well, my families’ secrets are a little more ‘out there.’

It always feels strange to release my own work out into the wild, particularly when a project has been kicking around for a long time. Blood Relatives was produced in 2007, during my second year at university, as part of a radio drama module. I wrote the script and produced the final piece alongside Robert Sheader. Originally the story involved a group of teenagers stumbling upon a music festival that turned out to also be a werewolf gathering. I’m thankful that Rob, being the straight talking kind of person he is, pointed out that the concept was a bit shit and derivative. The final Blood Relatives is still very derivative – peppered throughout are references to many of my writing influences – but I hope it comes across as derivative in a good way. The script is pure hokum but I still like it – one of the few things I have written that I can look back on without crying in despair.

Although my memory is now becoming notoriously poor, I clearly recall the recording day being very fun, if a little stressful. Supporting my recollections are some out-takes that I shall post here in due course. While there are many areas of the production that, in hindsight, I’d like revisit, casting is not one of them – for the most part I think we were spot on with our varied and enthusiastic team of players – even if the guy playing Walter does ham it up a bit.

I remember when you were making this so it’s great to finally hear it 😀
You’d better have got a first for it.

    • illegibleme Says:

Ah, but the important question is, “Did you like it?”

      • masterpieceinme Says:

I was hoping to avoid answering that question :S
        Let’s just pretend you didn’t ask 😛
Kidding. It was good. I still can’t get used to hearing Geordie accents on anything but Byker Grove and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

    • illegibleme Says:

I’m pretty much the same RE accents. There’s just something about our own that grates. I wonder if cockneys feel the same way. It must be worse for them.

I think I got a good mix of voices in to BR though, Geordie, RP, West Country, Californian…

  3. This is great fun. I love when the villain shouts “SILENCE!” to the mouthy heroes. Well done all!
